Retrofitting Furnaces and Boilers

If your home heating system uses a furnace or boiler, a retrofit can help increase efficiency and reduce your energy costs without the expense of a full replacement.

The exact nature of retrofits that can be done on a system varies depending on the type of fuel the system uses (gas, oil, or electricity).

We can inspect your furnace or boiler and let you know what type of retrofits are available, how much they would cost, and what the potential energy savings might be.

Furnace and Boiler Replacement

Replacing an aging furnace or boiler can improve the heating efficiency by over 40%, resulting in a large savings on your energy bill. New systems can be up to 98.5% efficient, meaning they convert almost all of the fuel they burn to useful heat—potentially reducing your heating costs by up to half.

Not only are they more efficient, new furnaces and boilers are also more environmentally friendly. On average, replacing a furnace or boiler that is 56% efficient with one that is 90% efficient will result in a reduction of 1.5 tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year if you use gas for fuel, or 2.5 tons if you use oil.

The key to maximizing your energy savings is to make sure you purchase the proper size boiler or furnace. The trained technicians at Air Tech can make sure that you get the right size unit, and they can also give you operating tips to make sure you don’t spend any more than necessary to heat your home.

Heat Pumps

Heat pumps can actually be used to heat and cool your home, depending on the season. Unlike furnaces or boilers, heat pumps do not actually produce any heat of their own, they simply move heat present in the environment from one place to another (hence the name).

In the winter, heat pumps move heat from outside your home to the inside, and in the summer they do the opposite.

The air-source heat pump is the most commonly used type, and it can reduce the electricity used for heating by about 50% compared to baseboard heaters and furnaces.

Other types of heat pumps include the absorption heat pump (which is also sometimes called a gas-fired heat pump) and geothermal heat pumps. The pumps are named based on where they source their heat, and each has advantages and disadvantages.

We can advise you which type of heat pump would be best for your circumstances, or whether you’d be better off using a furnace or boiler to heat your home.

We can also repair and/or maintain your existing heat pump. Common heat pump repairs include replacing a broken defrost board or defrost sensor, which can cause the heat pump to basically turn into a block of ice.

Most heat pump repairs are fairly simple, and thanks to our low price guarantee they’ll also be fairly inexpensive when you use Air Tech.

Gas Log Fireplaces

If you like the benefits of a traditional wood-burning fireplace but don't want to mess with all the fire risks, clean-up, and maintenance associated with wood-burning fireplaces, gas log fireplaces could be your answer.

Not only do they eliminate all the problems associated with wood-burning fireplaces, they are also 99.9% efficient and can be installed in almost any home.

We have partnered with the top brand in the industry, Monessen, to offer our customers a full range of gas log and ventless fireplace options. Click here to learn more about our gas log fireplace installation and repair services.

Air Conditioning Frequently Asked Questions

Below are answers to some of the questions we frequently get about our heating services:

  • How is the efficiency calculated for a heating system?

The efficiency of a heating system is calculated using something called the Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency, or AFUE.  This number is arrived at by determining how efficient the appliance is at converting fuel into heat and then dividing that by the annual fossil fuel energy consumed by the appliance.

  • What is a good temperature to set your thermostat at in the winter?

Most people are comfortable at a temperature of about 70 to 75 degrees.  However, dry air feels colder than moist air, so if the air in your home is very dry, you might want to consider using a humidifier to make it feel warmer while still keeping your energy costs down.

  • How often should I change my air filter?

You should change the air filter in your heating system about once a month, unless you use a whole-house HEPA filter, which can be changed once every 6-12 months.

  • How can I tell if there is a gas leak in my furnace?

One danger of using natural gas to heat your home is the possibility of a gas leak.  Natural gas is odorless in its natural state, but gas companies use an additive to give the gas a smell so that people will be able to detect a leak and turn off their gas before it builds up to a dangerous level.
